Alberto Gonzalez: Liar or Dope?

Earlier, I said "Dope." Now, apparently, it turns out he really is a Liar:

Documents indicate eight congressional leaders were briefed about the Bush administration's terrorist surveillance program on the eve of its expiration in 2004, contradicting sworn Senate testimony this week by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The documents underscore questions about Gonzales' credibility as senators consider whether a perjury investigation should be opened into conflicting accounts about the program and a dramatic March 2004 confrontation leading up to its potentially illegal reauthorization.

He's not going to resign; Bush will not fire him. He's daring Congress to stop him. He's laughing in their faces. He's not even pretending to "preserve, protect, and defend" the US Constitution.

All that's left is to see what Congress will do in response. Their options? Impeachment, inherent contempt, or perhaps appointing a special prosecutor. But inherent contempt would eventually lead to a Senate trial presided over by (wait for it) dick Cheney. A special prosecutor would end, at best, with a conviction -- and a pardon by the president.

Only impeachment avoids any tampering by the Chief Executive.

Gonzalez must be removed; if he is not, his behavior will become a precedent for future Executive Department officials.
