What John McCain can look forward to if he gets the Republican nomination in '08
While New Orleans was drowning on Monday, August 29, 2005, George W. Bush visited John ("Mr. Birthday Cake") McCain to celebrate his birthday.
The End.

I'm going against the polls and conventional wisdom here, but I don't think McCain get's past the South Carolina primary, again.
Although the theme of this conspiracy theory that Karl Rove is preparing for a simultaneous Bush and Cheney impeachment by grooming Condi to take over to prevent "Speaker" Pelosi from becoming President is just too X-Files even for me -- it does remind me that there is no love lost between Rove and McCain.
As long as Karl doesn't get indicted, he will still be considered a king-maker. If Rove emerges from this administration with his power-broking reputation intact, McCain doesn't get out of New Hampshire this time. If the GOP money men still respect his skills, Rove will destroy McCain from within. Anybody outside the power elite who respected the Senator for his independence will choke on his sucking up to Bush and swallowing the castration of his anti-torture bill.
It's a lose-lose game for McCain, because if Rove goes down it will certainly be the final clod of dirt thrown on the grave Bush has dug for himself -- and that picture is radioactive with anyone thinking of donating to the GOP. He won't be able to afford bus fair out of Iowa.
Besides, he's no spring chicken.
I don't think Condi will run, and if she does, unless she has Rove on the payroll she will be a rank amateur. She's never run for anything, and will get crushed by the feeding frenzy that will be the GOP primary season -- starting immediately after this November's midterms. She's a fantastic VP choice. That could spell trouble.
Gulianni doesn't run. Making money is way more fun. Too many marriages for the bible belt.
They can't possibly put forth Romney. The GOPers are too skilled at destroying Massachusetts politicians. We might be dumb enough to a Kerry on the ticket, again, even after last election and the embarassment of Dukakis. They eat their young and will destroy Romney as an appetiser.
Frist? Oh please give us Frist. He's such a tool. He'd love to be a bigger part of la costa BushCo., and the power brokers might think him as controlable as George Jr., and they'd be right. But come November, even stiff Al Gore, circa 1999, giving a speech on the benefits of bio-deisel versus geothermal powered street cars, in Alaska, in Winter, on a Saturday, at dawn, at a water-sewage treatment plant, in 36 below temperatures, and sweating -- will still get more support than Bill Frist.
Frist is Bob Dole without the charm, Newt Gingrich without the savvy, Bob Taft without the name, Trent Lott without the moxie. The perfect tool.
My biggest worry is Lindsay Graham. That boy has some smarts and could cause us real trouble. If he gets annointed, he steals a good portion of our John Edwards supporters.
George Allen? There are worse picks, but he's got bagage and a enough troubles with this year's election. Like Billy C. likes to say -- if you look past the next election, you might not get past the next election. Somebody needs to remind him that this year he's up for reelection, not the presidency.
But there's nothing like a head start to build up the old war chest. It's working for Hilary.
My gut tells me Allen and Condi are the GOP ticket unless he gets caught up in some of the scandals.

Pretty good analysis.
I'm not sure I buy the part about Condi on the ticket, but I do see Allen getting the nomination.

You heard it hear first folks. Mark and Ara prognosticate George Allen versus, um . . . somebody with a "D" after their name in the '08 election.
We need to keep this link archived, which at least should raise some eyebrows that Allen is not only for sale -- but comes cheap. Hopefully a picture emerges showing him and Abramoff sitting next to each other as described in the Vanity Fair article. I'd like to see more of him and his buddy Pat "The Wacko" Robertson together telling us that Katrina was God's punishment for "Girls Gone Wild Does The Big Easy".
It's never too early to go all Mayberry Machiavelli on their ass.
