America already agrees with our progressive ideals

Recently, I was in Little Rock, Arkansas, during the week that the Clinton Library opened. While I wasn't able to attend the opening, I did spend a couple of evenings hanging out in the bustling River Market District which is within walking distance of the Library.
One evening, I sat at the bar of the Flying Saucer (I highly recommend it) and had a sandwich and a beer. While I was waiting for my food to arrive, I picked up a copy of the Little Rock Free Press, one of those local alternative papers that is edgy and hip. You know the kind.
Anyway, I came across an article from Christy Ward that got me thinking that progressive Democrats need not move to the right in order to appeal to most of America's electorate. While Christy gets all in your face, I realized most Americans would have no problem with what she believes in nor, for that matter, how she points it out.
Here is the passage that jumped out at me:
The problem of dealing with "moral values" is a tough one in this country. It seems many Americans are not up to nuance in thought. They like their thoughts like they like their pianos, black and white. So let's give it to them in black and white.Do I believe that progressives need to talk about "Christian values of tolerance and compassion? No.
- If don't think abortion should be safe and legal, tell them they need to move their asses to Saudi Arabi. No women are getting abortions there.
- If they think gays should not have the rights of other Americas, tell them to build a damn time machine and move their asses to Nazi Germany. Gays had no rights there.
- If you want to be less fantastical, you might want to remind them that that sort of condemnation should lie with God and not the government. Then tell them to move their asses to Saudi Arabia just for fun.
- When they whine that embryonic stem cell research is going to kill little babies, suggest they begin a campaign to implant those thousands of left-over frozen embryos in the women of child bearing age at their church.
They could also house them in the basements of their mega-churches, paying for the little dears upkeep, until they are all born or the end of the civilization. If they're willing to keep their wives and daughters pregnant and raising babies for the rest of their lives and for generations to come, we should be willing to travel to Europe to receive the medical cures that stem cell research will someday provide...
Perhaps I seem to be a goof, and maybe I am, but I do sincerely hope the DNC can get it's head out of it's ass and learn how to talk middle Amercia down. The fear mongers have them feeling under siege culturally.
The left needs a charismatic preacher (besides Jesse Jackson) to remind them of the Christian values of tolerance and compassion. Because as long as they believe a couple of middle aged lesbians getting married will turn their country into a Godless jungle, they're going to continue to vote Republican.
Do I believe that Saudi Arabia should become more like us instead of the other way around? Oh, yes I most definitely do, my friends. And I think most Americans believe that, too.
