After weight-loss surgery, some find new addictions
-->
Apparently, many weight-loss surgery patients adopt other addictive behavior, e.g., they'll start drinking like a fish. Psychologists even have a name for it: "addiction transfer," an outcome of substance-abuse treatment whereby patients swap one compulsive behavior for another.
This is why people at AA meetings smoke a lot...
I always said that if Starbuck's were really smart, they'd stake out the corners across from AA meeting halls.
I once did a paper, "OCD and co-morbid drug addiction (something like that)", that examined that very subject. Findings: 1) surprisingly little research on what seems like a no-brainer (so-to-speak) question, 2) not much twin-study correlation between full-blown OCD and addiction and 3) a possible causal relationship between compulsive tendencies (which are quite common) and addiction, that needed further study (see finding 1).
