Sign of Weakness: Republicans Target Just 3 Senate Races

OK, this should probably be viewed as evidence of a gathering storm bearing down on the Republicans:

  • the Republican National Committee is putting a lot of money on three Senate races where incumbent Republicans are endangered -- Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee (open seat). The traditional media is now calling this a "firewall" strategy, i.e., save the Republican Senate from immolation.
  • They (RNC) are NOT putting that money into several other races with endangered Republican incumbents: Pennsylvania, Montana, and Rhode Island. This seems to indicate what everyone has been saying for some time: the Republicans are probably going to lose those seats, so why waste party money on them?
  • The RNC is effectively overruling the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee in doing all of this.
That last bullet point is a newly-revealed sign of Republican friction that, when it happened to the Democrats (Dean vs. Emmanuel), made national headlines for months.

The traditional media smells blood in the water.

P.S. What this means is that the Democrats would have to sweep all six seats AND hang on to New Jersey, which may be the Republicans' best chance at flipping a seat their way. If they can do that, they take over the Senate. Sounds like a long-shot to me. [Note: Kos is also pessimisstic...]

This assumes that Virginia Republican Senator Macacawitz beats Democratic challenger Jim Webb -- and that race is closer than anyone thought it would be.

P.P.S. I just like saying "Senator Macacawitz."
