AZ-05: Hayworth Surrogate to Jews: "No wonder there are anti-Semites"

JD Hayworth is the Republican incumbent in Arizona's 5th Congressional District. I've heard him speak on TV and radio many, many times. The right-wing noise machine loves him because he is predictably loyal to Bush; he smiles nicely, and can make the requisite jokes with Don Imus. But the bottom line is that he has the style of a bombastic blowhard -- wrapping himself in the flag which, for him, comes in two shades: black and white.

It comes as no surprise that he is the hardest of hardliners on the immigration issue, even going so far as to praise Henry Ford's anti-Semitic "Americanization" program while claiming that he was just urging all immigrants to learn how to speak English.

His Jewish constituents were not impressed.

In fact, the stink on Hayworth has gotten so bad that he has stopped attending any functions where Jewish consituents might be present. Like, you know, at a synagogue:

U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth bailed on a scheduled campaign appearance Tuesday evening only to send in his place surrogates who repeatedly lectured the audience at Temple Beth Israel in Scottsdale and proclaimed that Hayworth [not a Jew] "is a more observant Jew" than those present. Holy crap. Talk about tone-deaf. But wait...there's more:
The comment by Jonathan Tratt, a spokesman for the Hayworth campaign, drew loud and angry boos and caused nearly three-quarters of the crowd of more than 200 to walk out in disgust.
No! Really? What a numbskull. But it didn't end there....
After the walkout, another Hayworth surrogate, Irit Tratt, stood on the Temple's bimah [pulpit] as she told members of the audience who gathered to ask questions, "No wonder there are anti-Semites."
For an encore, she used the temple's Torah as a placemat while she ate a bacon cheeseburger.

Hayworth is expected to win re-election. That said, Harry Mitchell is his opponent and you can donate to his campaign here.
