Poll tells Dems: Shut up and let them fight in peace
-->
A new poll reports that seventy percent of respondents said that criticism of the war by Democratic senators hurts troop morale.
It's an interesting poll and Mark Adams has provided an excellent reflection of what the poll might mean.
Here's my take on it:
- Is it the act of criticising that hurts morale, or is it the content of the criticism?
- What hurts morale more -- that people are questioning authority or the realization that the questions might reveal a very, very painful truth?
In other words, is it possible that troops morale will crater when the troops discover that they were sent to fight and die based on a lie?
- Someone once said that "hell is discovering the truth too late." I certainly don't want to make the lives of our fighting men and women any worse than it already is.
So...should we all just shut up and let them fight in peace?
Two things:
1) Democrats aren’t the only ones criticizing the administration argument for war (e.g., Powell, Clarke, Wilkerson, etc.) or how we’ve waged the war (Hagel, McCain, Scowcroft, etc.).
2) The dishonesty of the administration’s argument for war is a settled matter, at least from the perspective of the public. Democrats need not continue to make that case, except in response to the administration or their apologists; the documentary, recorded history will take care of the rest.
On the other hand, if the administration wanted to try to rebuild it’s credibility, as well as support for the war effort, it could come clean, own up to its dishonest “marketing” of the war and tell the American people, once-and-for-all, what they thought they could accomplish by overthrowing Saddam. Perhaps if people understood the neoconservative’s motives and desired outcome, they would be more ready to forgive their ends-justifies-the-means mendacity and rally behind the cause. Perhaps not but they should be willing to sacrifice themselves politically for any chance to redeem their grand vision and the outrageous cost we’ve all paid for it.
Shhh, Shhhhepp.
Remember, when your enemy is digging a hole for themselves, hand them a shovel, not a ladder.
At least make it a rope. They can hang themselves as easily as climb out with it.
BTW, Thanks Ara for the props.
Speaking of polls, I just got my copy of the Toledo Blade (no link yet) which put's Gov. Taft in single digits -- 6.5%
We're way beyond pitchforks and torches. I'd bet Charlie Manson has better numbers.
yOu'Re JoKiNg!
6.5%??
That has got to be some sort of record.
And of course, the obvious question: Who ARE those people??
"Remember, when your enemy is digging a hole for themselves, hand them a shovel, not a ladder."
No worries, Mark. To make the ladder work, you need to know which way is up. It appears they have no moral compass to point the way.
Shep, LOL.
