Israel prepares for political upheaval
-->
Is Ariel Sharon quitting Likud to form a centrist party one step ahead of early elections? I guess stranger things have happened.
[pause]
Come to think of it, maybe they haven't.
P.S. Those on the left in the US, those who revile Sharon, those who favor US withdrawal from Iraq, should give Sharon more credit for withdrawing from Gaza.
You know me, I'm all for moderation and this looks like a move away from the extreme right wing in Jerusalem (and Baton Rouge) ;-)
The quesiton will be will Sharon become more moderate or will he move the moderates to the right.
I guess the first question will be can he hold the government together at all.
Pissstt!
Watch what Netanyahu does.
Yes. Well. He's already called Sharon a dictator. And he is running to head the remainder of Likud and he'll win handily.
There are six other guys vying for the top spot including one guy named (hand to God) Uzi.
Tough dudes, them Likudniks.
No shit, I just saw that, Benji is one tough MF'er, but unlike our version of tough guys who just posture and bully, he ain't stupid.
Oh, and I agree, Sharon did the right thing w/Gaza -- and I approve this move too.
I have friends who are bitterly disappointed and even outraged by Sharon's tactics over the last several years but, hey, Israel is a democracy. If they don't like it, they can vote him out.
Bottom line: he still has to win this next election, but it looks like that'll happen -- the new party will have a plurality of seats in the Knesset.
I wish the people in power here would follow his example. I know Bush is a huge admirer of Sharon's but I just don't see that happening.
But you never know.
