Comments: For Obama, what does leadership mean?

Oh my god, you're becoming one of the converted. You're starting to sound like me talking about Edwards.

We've got to get those two together.

I couldn't agree more. I'd just love to hear Obama articulate something more tangible than a vague post-politics kind of message. Yes, he's charismatic, yes, he wants to change politics, and yes, he's got "that vision thing" down to a T - great stuff - but what would he actually DO as President?

I think you've hit something important. The people are leading the country now - they have been and are way ahead of both the politicians and pundits (the establishment class). Their candidate will not be a Hillary or, certainly, a McCain.

I'm sure that'll come out as time goes on. I know he's called for universal health care and for a swift end to US engagement in Iraq. Beyond that, we'll see.

But, with all due respect, a white paper is just a white paper. Once you get elected, it all goes out the windows as events develop.

This is why people want to know what kind of person you are. You can call it the "character issue" if you want. It matters.

Look at Bush. We got a pretty good idea of who he really was before he got elected: a shallow, angry drunk, a spoiled trust fund baby with Oedipal issues. Of course he waved that all away by saying he was "born again." But we can see now that the former assessment was more accurate than the latter declaration.

I'm officially undecided. But I do like Obama. Of course I'd be happy with Edwards and/or Hillary, too. Or Bill Richardson. Or any of the current crop. Even, sigh, Biden. They're all capable and much better than McCain, or Giuliani, or whomever, on the other side.
